about

This is the first album from The Afterthoughts, a 3 piece rock band made up of close friends who came together with their instruments to make music.

The songs on this album were created with the ideas and inspirations from 3 separate musicians from various musical backgrounds.
On this album you'll find varying sounds from smooth vocal melodies and harmonies on Cruel World, heavy riff-based guitars on Will of Fire, to drum lead grooves on Resistance.

We hope you enjoy listening to From Pressure Come Diamonds as much as we enjoyed making it.

REVIEWS:

8.8/10 - Classic

Standout tracks:
"Time Alone"
"Open Up"
"Protest"
"Cruel World"

'From Pressure Come Diamonds' is a solid debut album. Though very clearly rock 'n' roll at the core, songs effortlessly weave through various sub-genres of rock. The aptly-named "Country" gives us a hint of CCR and a dash of Steppenwolf. "Open Up" feels like an early 90's nu-metal jam. "Protest" channels the Clash, "Time Alone" is reminiscent of a mellow pop-punk ballad and "Can't Go On" verges on surf rock more than once. It's an enjoyable ride venturing through different archetypes of rock and never does it seem like The Afterthoughts are experimenting with one particular style or another for the first time; they come across confident and seasoned.
Furthermore, the influence of each of these styles is limited effectively, giving the album feel of cohesion and coherence.

Interestingly, although the album often dives into more hard rock/grunge sounds (the call-to-arms vibe of "Resistance", the cleverly harsh "Power Fun", or the pace-shifting "Will of Fire"), it doesn't sound or feel aggressive, antagonistic or angry. It's good, clean fun and leaves you feeling positive.

Due in part to the significant musical variance, every song is unique. Never do two songs sound the same with little distinguishability. This makes them easy to remember and the simple (but still intelligent) lyrics ensure From Pressure Come Diamonds is a great summer road-trip sing-a-long.

Sometimes, though, it seems that while they are expertly exploring different styles of rock with ease, The Afterthoughts play it safe and don't venture out of the comfort zone enough. The album, at times, lacks a distinct personality. The most unique song on the album is easily the refreshing closer "Cruel World", which, even without the opening sound effects or soothing vocals, whisks you away to a pier at sunset to watch the ocean waves and reflect on life. The lyrics elegantly compliment the beautiful vibe and create a wonderful contrast between the theme and the music itself.

Between infectious guitar riffs and powerful drum breaks that dominate the songs (the best of which is at the end of "Protest") and the excellent vocal command of the singer that acts as the icing on the cake, From Pressure Comes Diamonds is an incredibly satisfying experience from start to finish.

(For the sake of perspective, other albums I have given an 8.8)
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
Two Door Cinema Club - Beacon
